Susan Rhodes: A Lighting Legacy in Seattle

Susan “Suzy” Rhodes was an active force in the Seattle lighting design community since the early 1990s. Her career began at Abacus Consultants, and in 2001, she teamed up with Denise Simpson to establish LightWire, a testament to her spirit.

Suzy’s dedication extended beyond exceptional design, evidenced by her numerous local and national awards. Her “no-nonsense” approach and commitment to “getting the job done right the first time” were hallmarks of her work. This, combined with her architectural engineering background, made her a unique lighting designer, adept at both technical execution and conceptual brilliance.

Always a champion for community, Suzy was heavily involved in volunteer work and initiatives that fostered connection. Her passion project was the IES Seattle Scavenger Hunt, a fundraiser for the GKL Memorial Scholarship supporting future lighting professionals. Suzy’s talent for crafting ingenious clues and hilarious challenges made the hunt an unforgettable experience. Her creativity and dedication to this event will be deeply missed.

Susan’s passing leaves a void in the Seattle lighting community. However, her legacy lives on. By donating to the newly renamed Susan Rhodes IES Scavenger Hunt, you can help ensure the continuation of this event she so cherished and the support it provides to aspiring lighting professionals.

Susan leaves a large hole in our lighting community and will be greatly missed. With your donation today to the newly named Susan Rhodes IES Scavenger Hunt, you will help to carry on her work with an event that she loved.
