“Lighting Considerations for Plants and Animals”

Event Info / Abstract:

Architectural Lighting design fundamentally focuses on “human first” lighting. As biophillic design brings more plants into these spaces, and zoos + aquariums embrace LED designs, a fundamentally different set of design requirements must be considered in order to ensure the health and well being of the non-human inhabitants of the space. This CEU aims to define the differences in Light perception between humans and animals + plants, understand the terms and considerations, and blend animal care + plant lighting with traditional architectural lighting.

About The Presenter

Brendan Sullivan has been involved in the world of animal and plant LED lighting professionally for a decade, and as a saltwater aquarium hobbyist for over 20 years. Brendan has spent the last 8 years working alongside some of the largest zoos, aquariums, and interior landscapers in the world to quantify the lighting requirements needed for various species, and determining the best way to meet those needs with the current products on the market. As new research is published, he assists with guidance and best practice adjustments, and has worked to define new products from the ground up when situations arise where current products do not meet the animal or plant needs.
