About this Course
LED lighting technology has rapidly taken over the lighting market. Over the last 10 years LED technology has come to dominate every lighting application. This is a technology shift perhaps as big as the jump from gas lighting to incandescent 100 years ago that has taken place within a massive, well established industry. LED technology can outperform previous lighting technologies by every metric, but they don’t always, and LEDs bring new features and opportunities. So we ask the questions – why and how has this happened, what are the implications, and what does the future hold for lighting technology and lighting professionals. In particular, we will cover the dominant LED lighting technologies for general illumination; newly enabled lighting applications in horticulture, health, and manufacturing; sky glow and ecological impacts; and future prospects for the technology.
About the Speaker

Dr. Morgan Pattison has spent the last 20 years managing R&D and consulting within the topic of LED and lighting technology and applications. He has led the US DOE Lighting R&D Program as Senior Technical Advisor, working to maximize energy and cost savings enabled by LED technology. In this role, he has developed R&D strategy and prioritization, wrote the DOE technology roadmaps, and managed DOE R&D investments. Dr. Pattison has also worked with numerous private clients to develop LED materials, technologies, and products for general illumination and other lighting applications.
In addition, Dr. Pattison has worked with the National Park Service to measure baseline light pollution levels and understand the impacts of light pollution on animals and ecosystems. Dr. Pattison has a PhD in Materials Science from UC Santa Barbara with specific thesis research on the topic of high efficiency LED architectures and was advised by Professor Shuji Nakamura, the inventor of the blue and white LEDs.
